Paperback, 288 pages
Published January 7th 1998 by Back Bay Books (first published 1997)

Summary from Goodreads:

When a photographer researches a legendary crime that took place a century earlier, she immerses herself in the details of the case--and finds herself caught in the grip of an uncontrollable emotion.

My Thoughts:

What interested me about this book was that part of it was based on actual events that took place on March 5, 1873 when 2 women on Smuttynose Island off the coast of Maine were murdered and there was one survivor who escaped spent the night in a cave with her dog.  This story was weaved in and out of the main character Jean's story.  I liked Ms. Shreve's take on what she believes happened and who the real murderer was.

The writing was good, but the story was sometimes hard to follow as you would be reading about Jean and her story, then suddenly halfway through the page the story would shift to the events taking place in 1873 and then back to Jean again.  For me this was confusing and did not make the story flow well. It seemed choppy but I do not know if that was intended by Ms. Shreve or not.

This was the first book I read by Ms. Shreve and I enjoyed it.  I would definitely read another of her books.

2) What have you finished reading? Sadly I am still working on my first book.
3) What is your favorite read so far? See number 2
4) What about your favorite snacks? Can't go wrong with Skittles
5) Have you found any new blogs through the readathon? Have not really had a chance to look.

Bleak House

I have been interested in reading some of those classic books that I refused to read in high school.  I thought I would never be interested in ever reading classic books but I have heard many good things about them on Goodreads so I thought I would give it a try.  I started to read Bleak House by Charles Dickens and it was off to a good start.  But then I began to fizzle out.  Some of the chapters were confusing and I was not sure how or why this chapter or characters fit into the story and when I reached a point where all the characters had the same last name but just started with a different letter like Doodle and Foodle, I found I had had enough.  This was a DNF for me but that is not to say I will not stop reading classics.  This one just did not work for me.  Maybe I will have better luck with the next one.
